Reversible Shetland Sweater
The Shetland sweater is old school. The most reliable of sweaters, bookish yet slightly rugged. We produce ours in Scotland with J. C. Rennie authentic Shetland yarn, celebrating their 223rd year in 2021.
Our version of the Shetland is reversible! One side of the sweater is smooth; the other side is brushed to a soft, shaggy finish. Let your mood decide. Fun fact: this shaggy effect is achieved by an artisan brushing technique using teasels, a spiky cone flower native to Europe that gently lifts and pulls the fibers – a process that cannot be replicated with man-made brushes.
So, what exactly is a Shetland? The sweater style gets its name from the Shetland Islands, an archipelago north of mainland Scotland. The region is beautifully craggy with trying, inclement weather. The Shetland knit was born out of a need to provide daily warmth and comfort to the wearer. Native Shetland wool enjoys a protected status, shorn from a pure-bred variety of the Shetland sheep. It is as warm as it is airy, trapping heat in without weighing you down. It’s also hard wearing. While Shetland isn’t as soft as cashmere, it also doesn’t pill as easily as other types of wool yarns. Vintage Shetlands are coveted.
The Shetland was conceived with the premise of longevity as a priority. Now that's sustainability, old school style.
